I was invited to present at a UC LEADS workshop on 08/05/2025 on how to interweave stories of adverse life experiences into graduate school applications.
As a former foster youth, I find it important to effectively convey triumph over adversity, as there is usually a negative perception of this demographic. Unfortunately, <4% of foster youth obtain a B.S. degree and <1% obtain an M.S. compared to >37% and >14% of the U.S. population over 25 in 2022. So few foster youth obtain a Ph.D. that I could not find a statistical quantification—I assume it’s <0.05%.
